[00:02:01] And here we are live on FoosTalk Live Episode number 215 Well hey there I'm Tom Robinson It feels like ages since we were here live Even though our last episode 214 was pre-recorded But we still had some time out Some adventures to go on myself and of course my co-host
[00:02:24] By the way as long as we're talking about my co-host Let's talk about Foosball tonight And of course I know that my co-host loves to talk about Foosball That would be Randy Raposo out of the great state of Alabama Hello Randy Hey Tom
[00:02:40] So you seem a little tired Would there be a reason for that? Yeah I mean just you know life and work and stuff like that We went away last weekend had a great trip Yeah where'd you go? We went to Pigeon Forge
[00:02:57] My wife wanted to do some shopping They got some nice outlets out there She wanted to do some shopping before school started up again So we went up got a little cab and took the dog And then they had a nice one day tournament in Knoxville
[00:03:09] So I got to go play with those guys Nice You know Thomas Dyke and Greg Sherrod and Mubarak Chase Pennell they do a really nice job So they actually they got one coming up next month A World's Warm Up And that's the thing they run one event
[00:03:26] They limit the teams They knock it out they do a Swiss format But it was a bring a no-two pro bring 16 teams they paid out a thousand bucks Really really nice They do a good job it was fun Awesome Got to play with Thomas Dyke He played great
[00:03:44] You know we got to the finals You got to the finals Yeah I just I couldn't I couldn't do it I couldn't get it done for Thomas he played great And I really had a lot of fun I would definitely play with him again
[00:03:54] Who'd you guys play in the finals? We played Chris Folsom who's just a huge douchebag I hate him And Chris Boyd who's also a tremendous douchebag So but they beat us in four games Wow Yeah it's got to be the name It's got to be the name
[00:04:14] Yeah so but yeah a lot of foosball coming up Mississippi's coming up Ohio's coming up Worlds is coming up bunch of foosball Yeah if you know I kind of wanted to start with If I could just say something real quick Yeah
[00:04:28] I know we haven't been on for a while And we've had some stuff happen nationally That's been kind of crazy And I just I just want to say No matter you know who you vote for Or what color you are Or how you lean sexually
[00:04:45] I'm just really glad that Like foosball is just a thing that we can do And enjoy no matter No question You know no matter what we do in our personal lives I love foosball I love my foosball family And I'm so thankful that we can get together
[00:04:58] And just play a game and have a good time So you know we've got two awesome players on tonight We do Hall of Famer Hall of Famer and just some other guy Who should Spudkik And they're going to tell us about Ohio State So super pumped
[00:05:12] It is great because there's just so much happening Every weekend now it seems like there's some kind of Decent tournament happening And the calendar is filling up so fast We're running out of spaces you know And so it is certainly something we'll talk about tonight
[00:05:26] As far as the just the schedule of tournaments coming up I know that well just this weekend Up in New Hampshire We saw the emergence of Kevin Walker Kevin Walker Yeah, he's back Came out of the woodwork Yeah I'm so excited because you know I know
[00:05:45] Again I'm not on Facebook but I see he's been painting Yes Right and I feel like he's been working through some like Childhood trauma through paint by number or something I don't know The pictures are pretty right
[00:05:57] But I know a guy who can do that with AI too So Okay I want to see you do it like by hand I want to watch him do it otherwise It's not real Like that dude Bob from What was it Don't talk bad about Bob Ross
[00:06:14] Bob Ross Paint by Well hey let's not get there But Kevin Walker is looking to come to Worlds by the way He's getting warmed up I heard he's playing with Kevin Westcott and that is a tough team That is going to be good
[00:06:27] Yeah so we're excited here in the Northeast Anyway So you know tournaments are really starting to pile up We're starting to see some great stuff And you know for the first time in 12 years Ohio State champions The championship is coming back this year
[00:06:44] And it's because of our two guests for this evening First of all From the great state of Ohio Steve Biney, legendary player And of course doing this Doing his damnedest to get Ohio State ready to go Steve welcome to Fooze Talk Live Hey Tom, Randy Rick
[00:07:01] So it's great to have you tonight And your partner Rick Pomeroy who happens to be in Florida this evening I don't know if you guys can tell But if you're watching the Twitch TV feed You can see the beach theme behind Rick's head here on the wall
[00:07:16] Kind of a dead giveaway Rick Yeah that's okay But welcome to Fooze Talk Live Thanks for having me Tom Absolutely Randy, Steve I thought there was a window behind your head Now I see it's a painting Alright, I get it It's a painting Did Kevin Walker paint that?
[00:07:36] Did Kevin Walker paint that? I don't know, maybe Well first of all This coming tournament for you too Obviously there's a lot of preparation That goes into putting on a tournament Whose idea first of all Was it to bring Ohio State back after 12 years
[00:08:01] I think it was about a Maybe a year and a half ago We were playing in a friend's house Rick wanted to talk to me And he had talked to some other people A group of people Then a couple of them said
[00:08:16] Or maybe Dustin said you probably should talk to Steve And he did And then when we started talking about it I think he figured out we're on the same page And everything started making sense Because there's a lot more to it than you think there is Oh yeah
[00:08:31] One of the things I told Rick was In foosball a lot of people have good ideas That usually involves somebody else doing all the work And risking the money True I knew that we trust each other And Dustin the same way So when it comes to money
[00:08:50] There's nothing funny We can trust each other You can tell them, Rick Basically how that conversation went Yeah, there was an initial conversation At TKO a couple years ago And we decided to get Steve involved of course And it took us 14 months
[00:09:17] Just to get through the hotel process To find a hotel That was a pain in itself That is tough Yeah I have a much more appreciation for Trying to put on Or at least assistant putting on one of these events It's a lot of work
[00:09:38] So when it came to finding a venue Then of course you've got to find tables So there's so many ingredients here Now you say it was what Over a year to find a hotel Yeah, we were close last summer But it fell apart at the end
[00:10:01] And we had, I don't know Maybe three or four or five months of work into that And then we landed Had a conversation early on this year With the hotel that we're moving forward with So yeah, it was well over a year No doubt
[00:10:22] Yeah, it's a lot of effort You know, we had a week and we could have Put the tournament on Remember Rick, but we didn't want to Croach on Michigan And it would have been like two weeks later And we just don't want to do that
[00:10:38] So the window wasn't right So we put it off Plus it would have been too much last notice So we decided to put it off Till we could work it out a little better Logistically I mean when you lay out the calendar At the beginning of the year
[00:10:52] And start looking at tournaments And laying out when a good time is There really isn't a good time Yeah There really isn't Yeah, it's just I mean if you're going to give everybody two Two three weeks apart You know for gaps between tournaments
[00:11:08] There's only a few spots available Without stepping on somebody's toes Yeah, that makes sense Regionally players like where You know nobody can complain At this point in time We kind of have We have it really good Like we have tournaments to pick from
[00:11:25] So you know you're absolutely right Trying to find a time during the Because some people I know some people that only play in the winter I know some people only play in the summer So they're picking and choosing their tournaments Can they drive, can they fly
[00:11:39] And like I have somebody from Massachusetts They're driving 16 hours to come down and play So because they can This is the time of year where they can play So you know they know Ohio State's going to be A good event that's going to be put on
[00:11:53] You know it's going to be very well run And they're excited to go play But you know like I said You got Mississippi coming up Ohio coming up Then you got Worlds Then you got Florida Then you got you know name it And it's just been
[00:12:08] I know at the beginning of the year Mary had like 14 tournaments on her schedule And the schedule has only grown So it's a good time for foosball If you're a player But you know I You know from the promoter side And again I've never been
[00:12:24] A quote on quote promoter But I know a lot goes into it And I feel like from a player's perspective We need to be appreciative For the amount of work that goes into these So thank you gentlemen Yeah, thank you Yeah absolutely So when it came to
[00:12:41] What was it 12 years ago Was the last time Ohio State was held What happened in those 12 years Who did the last tournament by the way The last one Initially going back to the 80s I mean I've been to a lot of them There would be local promoters
[00:12:58] They might be a 3000, 5000, 6000 Then Mary was doing it I think there was maybe I don't want to get it wrong But as much as 10 maybe And maybe it was 8 She was doing them But I think they weren't at a hotel though Okay They may have been
[00:13:17] But it's been a long time We've always kicked it around Just like we kicked around the Hall of Fame You know But who's going to step up and do it It's an expense Yeah It just is Running a tournament You know most people out there Don't realize
[00:13:31] When we start off We wanted to do a 10 Then it went to 11, 5 Then it was 12 Then it was 13, 13, 7, 14 But just to put on a 14 grander No kidding We have to bring in about 28,000 to break even I mean I'll tell you that firsthand People don't realize
[00:13:50] The expense and the work Involved in doing this That's a lot of money Yeah That's a lot of money Logistically I mean that's a bit of a nightmare But at the same time It's been 12 years Since there was a tournament It's great to find
[00:14:06] You guys are found a place You've found a location in the calendar To do this Congratulations on your effort After 12 years of not having an Ohio State And Ohio's been the home Of a lot of great players Not the least of which of you two
[00:14:22] I'm not sure why But those other ones They weren't really attended that well As it could have been either Huh You know they were state tournaments But it was more like a local Now we're going to bring in people From all over the country
[00:14:37] We're going to at least have At the minimum 12 masters People from Washington, California Like Randy said New England area I'm really surprised That the feedback And a number of people That are planning on coming It's more than we expected So what's your cutoff
[00:14:55] I mean if you got 300 players Would that be doable for you guys? 300 Yeah Well Mary says it's doable So it's doable Okay it's doable Okay And how many tables Have you got lined up What's the size of the amount Of tables 25 25 Yeah That's a That would be certainly
[00:15:20] For 25 tables and 300 players I guess would be An interesting challenge But certainly 300 would be That would be I think that's a big stretch Okay Okay Well nationals Nationals had 30 tables And Donald Donald said That we touched 300 I think we were at 285 86 at one point Okay And the three
[00:15:45] The 30 tables Managed that That amount So Yeah You know 300 players A lot of players Yeah Oh I can't imagine 300 players showing up For our state Yeah Well I mean it might not be Well when you think about it You guys are You're right in the middle
[00:16:04] You got Minnesota Michigan Pennsylvania area is there Missouri's on the other side You've got Kentucky And then like I said You got guys from New England coming I'm sure people are going to be flying in I'm sure the Canadians are going to be coming Because it's not far
[00:16:17] And this is a good tournament Pre-worlds to go You know Good warm up Yeah good warm up So I You know what I wouldn't be surprised If you guys got close to that number Yeah Well They need to start booking rooms If you're listening Book your room
[00:16:35] Don't be stupid Get it moving Get them I mean August 1st is coming It'll be here before you No I'm 24th to cut off They already increased They gave us an extension twice Okay I got you Our block of rooms So if they're going to attend
[00:16:52] They need to get it in there And get a reservation That's Wednesday Wednesday the 24th Yep Next Wednesday Gotcha That's your cutoff I've noticed in other situations With other tournaments That even though there's a call For people to sign up now Get your rooms Because they're going fast
[00:17:10] There's a lot of players That wait until the last second What's that all about? Yeah I never understood that They do Marry Everybody says the same thing Every year You know there's people That they wait till last minute I don't understand it I don't know Just Maybe
[00:17:30] They know they're coming But they just don't make a reservation I like to play in ahead So I don't get it Yeah right Even like with the pre-registration I know Mississippi State's on there now But She asks for pre-registration And how many tables to set up
[00:17:45] And some people It only takes a minute To go on there and register Exactly Same thing with book in a room You need a place to stay Just call them book your room And we get it sorted out But Fools ball players are Weirdos Or protagonists Or protagonists
[00:18:04] Or we don't listen Or procrastinators I don't know Procrastin protagonists? What's a protagonist? Protagonist would be the hero of the story That's a protagonist Then they're not that Yeah they're not that Yeah Pracinators Yeah I told you It's about that time Things are kicking in now
[00:18:20] Yeah time to do it I'll be the protagonist In this group Here we go Let's go You are the hero No It's I love the fact You guys are doing this I think it's so cool What when it comes to This particular tournament
[00:18:36] What are you going to do That's different from other tournaments That are currently underway Rick, you want to address that one? Well, I mean we are We are not going to do Championship format Okay We thought pretty much Because it was our first tournament
[00:18:56] And there's a lot of Conflict going on around that From people's different opinions But we decided just to go with The traditional double elimination Okay With the exception of handicapped And EYPs are going to be Single elimination Right So other than that It's going to be a traditional
[00:19:26] Fuseball tournament That you would have seen Over the last few years You know, Steve? Well, we decided to do double elimination It's no endorsement On either one over the other And Mary's defense And I've talked to her about it Championship format May be more suitable when you have
[00:19:47] A larger turnout You're concerned about times Oh sure It's our first one We didn't want that variable in there We wanted to do what people are used to We didn't want to alienate anybody In fact, I haven't been around lately Enough to realize
[00:20:02] Nor did I realize the adversarial nature Of that I didn't know So when I posted People would ask me I mean, I've literally had so many messages For people And I gotta tell you I'm just floored by the messages The calls, the texts Of people saying
[00:20:20] Hey, I'm going to come We want to support the tournament But isn't going to be championship Or double elimination I kept wondering Why am I getting all these questions? And now Hey, there's a little bit of controversy But it's nothing against championship format It's solely that
[00:20:36] We're doing what we're used to And we don't want to reinvent the wheel At our first tournament Yes I think that some people as I gather May not comment if it was championship format Where I've never heard one person Say they wouldn't comment if it's Double elimination Right
[00:20:54] If that makes sense No, it does There's been a lot of posting Social media, Facebook if you like And different polls that have been taken They're very informal Because they're just Facebook polls But overwhelmingly Responding in the positive for double elimination What can I tell you? Yes
[00:21:15] There's a lot of debate going on Pros and cons I think it's just change Yeah It's just my opinion It may be the answer That's going to help foosball along Maybe we need to tweak it a little bit Here and there It may not be Time will tell
[00:21:33] But for us We just wanted to keep it more traditional Good Yeah, no, I think that's a smart move Well, I'm curious when it comes to The hotel itself I mean How about food, restaurants That kind of stuff What's happening there? I was just going to ask that
[00:21:54] You guys, it's at a crown plaza, right? Yes In Worthington, Ohio Which is just on the north side of Columbus About 15 miles from the airport 12 miles from the airport Nice There's a nice restaurant That's going to be open Most of the time while we're there And of course
[00:22:12] There's a nice sized bar That's going to service us as needed And they're also going to set up a Cafe of food Sandwiches and snacks And pops and beer and drinks Back by the foosball room For convenience So like a typical setup Like something you'd get at Worlds
[00:22:36] Just a typical food beverage set up there By the room Yep And then the hotel restaurant That will serve a nice filet, hopefully Yeah, I think there's two options for steaks There's some Italian options I think there's a fish option chicken, you know Hey, forget about it
[00:22:57] All right Yeah All right Pizza How's your pizza? Give me some pizza Burger Come on Give me some spaghetti Yeah, they got like They got an old Italian grandma back there Widow for 40 years wearing all black Making her homemade marinara That's what I'm talking about
[00:23:14] That's pizza in the United States Is in Columbus, Ohio Oh, hold on a second Rick, have you been day drinking? Are you drunk right now? No, I've never drunk pizza Anybody Really? Really There's a lot of pizza places here Columbus is the home of great pizza
[00:23:33] You go elsewhere, you can't get good pizza You gotta come to Columbus Bro Within the state of Ohio Is that what you're saying? No, I'm talking about Columbus I'm talking about You know, I've been to a lot of states I've never found great pizza anywhere else
[00:23:46] Other than Columbus Bro I feel No, dude You need to come to Columbus And try I take it I take it a handful of them I feel like you've been painting a room all day With the windows shut And no circulation Okay, listen I haven't painted that, remember?
[00:24:06] There's a place I've been in the front too long Yeah, that's what it Look, he's red Look, there's a place in Providence, Rhode Island Right now named Fellini's They'll take a bite of that pizza And you'll start crying Tears It is I'm here to say
[00:24:22] I'm not looking for tea I'm looking for tea I'm not talking about that I'm talking about the sheer joy of the taste Like, there will be You'll hear, like, angels singing in the back It's the best pizza you've had in your life, dude
[00:24:34] I'm telling you, forget about it You're at Columbus, Ohio You gotta come to Columbus, Randy I'll take you to Rita's Hey, there's a challenge right there I'll go anywhere I'll go anywhere you pay for I'll buy We have had I'm confident people say
[00:24:50] It's the best pizza I've ever had That's a stretch, dude I've had a lot of pizza in a lot of places That is a stretch I'll try it I won't say no That's a stretch, dude But do they deliver? That's the question Do they deliver? No It's no
[00:25:06] Pick up only Pick up only It's been there for 48 years It's a gold mine Oh, man I'm not going to say that It's a gold mine Well, if it's good It should be Good pizza usually is Yeah They might do that too You never know Yeah
[00:25:24] You never know Have you ever made your choice? The invitation's there So what's done I mean, we're getting off on a tangent here But what's their go-to What's the pizza you get when you go there? Pepperoni and cheese I'm a pepperoni and cheese guy All right Okay
[00:25:43] I don't know I don't know I don't know I mean, you might Randy, you might be an everything guy I just like pepperoni I'm not an everything guy But I'm not basic either Let me get some pepperoni Or whole pepperonis to be exact You need sausage Or something
[00:25:59] Maybe some mushrooms Tom, let's get this back on the rails here Sorry, guys Oh, Lord You got me going You got me going You worked something tonight, Randy Yeah Columbus is the home of the best pizza in the world
[00:26:14] You have a football team in the college football team Look at that Oh, the Buckeyes The country, yeah There you go Now we're talking I'm in Alabama We don't know anything about college football We don't know anything about college football I'll just throw that out there
[00:26:27] That's for go-buckeyes Yeah I'm not getting beat up over college football So So leading up to Ohio State I know you guys just had the Arnold Not too long ago, right? March Okay, so this is going to be like your second
[00:26:43] state or regional level tournament this year, correct? Yes So was the Arnold something that you could build off of? Yeah We're limited what we can do there because of the venue Although it's the Arnold But there's no hotel right there There's a couple, 250,000 people coming into town
[00:27:04] Hotel rooms are hard to find and expensive Yeah, no kidding Logistically, it's a problem We couldn't do anything this size there You know, it's more of a It's not This is a larger type of event for sure Yeah But was like was
[00:27:22] Because the Arnold has been going on This is like the third year, fourth year now Fourth year Was it something that kind of helped Encourage and build this Ohio State happening now? Or
[00:27:35] You know, like would you guys be satisfied just doing the Arnold every year and having it be big? No No, I don't think so So it's nothing, the Arnold is great for what it is, but it's out of You couldn't put this on there
[00:27:50] We wouldn't have the room for the tables, the facility You can't park on site Just think about that You park into fairgrounds, you're bused in But it's a good term for what it is But we couldn't grow it that big
[00:28:02] But before the Arnold, you know, we've been talking about doing a state tournament for years Years Okay And then now we just decided, hey, let's do this And we really, really, really I asked these guys in the beginning You know, what are we willing to do here?
[00:28:18] Are we willing to take a loss because we could You just don't know And we really want to put on the Really the best tournament, the best state tournament there is And I've told them if we're not bigger than Texas State in five years, then I've failed because
[00:28:33] We should be bigger This is our first tournament, it's a 14 grander, we'll see where it goes But nothing against Texas State or North Carolina I'm just talking about well run established tournaments I want to be bigger than that And I should want to be bigger than that Yes
[00:28:51] That's ambition right there I'm interested to know, Steve, Rick How does the, just the hierarchy of putting together a tournament Each of you have your own role Describe for me how does that break down? Who does what?
[00:29:07] Well go ahead, Rick, Rick took pretty much care of the hotel right off the bat Okay I'm just a pretty face I'm the one people are, I'm talking to a lot of people They're calling a lot, making decisions on how do we want to do the format
[00:29:28] But we talk every day Every day, I mean multiple times about this But Rick pretty much handled security at the hotel Took care of that And then, you know, I've talked to Mary a lot because we're, Mary's providing the tables Her software running the tournament Yeah
[00:29:48] Staffing it and things like that So, you know, we want a well run tournament You can go ahead, Rick Oh yeah, I think we've done a good job Dustin Bayhass is also involved in this Yes
[00:30:02] So the three of us have talked, I mean, we've talked, I don't know, 70, 80 times over the last four or five months On calls and just divvied up responsibilities Here's everything that needs to get done Okay Who's going to take it
[00:30:17] And, you know, Dustin took some of it, I took some of it, and Steve took some of it So they, I know Steve's been inundated the last couple of months with trying to get people to come Yeah And, you know, once you get everything set in place
[00:30:37] And the hotel's set in place and the date's established And you get tables and, you know, with Mary's going to help us run the tournament, which is a huge help Because there's a lot of that that we don't have to worry about
[00:30:51] And then it's a matter of just getting the word out and getting people to make their hotel and come and have fun I'm always interested when it comes to media You know, how do you make use of, let's say, social media In other ways of promoting yourselves
[00:31:09] How does that work for you guys or is that just Dylan's department? Dustin I have a fairly large social media, a lot of people as far as Facebook, things like that So people contact me that way I've really thrown that flyer out well over 100 different food Nice
[00:31:35] You know, the only one, I did have one that kicked it back in their foosball promoter group But they went, I don't remember the name of it I don't think they're for that, but most people have been really, really accommodating
[00:31:48] They really want to help and they're excited about it It's kind of a new thing, Ohio, they don't know what to expect maybe It's three weeks before Worlds, so people are wanting to play a tournament before Worlds Get warmed up That would warm up
[00:32:05] Now, if this is successful this year, will you keep the same date every year? That's a good question, we've talked about that I think we wouldn't want to get any closer to Worlds, that's for sure So maybe one week back would be great
[00:32:25] But this weekend seems to be... And I know Mississippi State has run on this weekend in the past They had moved it to the week before Ohio So, I don't know, I think that's something we've got to talk about
[00:32:43] But we've got to make sure that this goes well for the hotel So we can have a partnership with them going forward Because yes, we would want to move forward and do this on a yearly basis So we need a hotel partner to do that
[00:33:01] And so as long as this goes good and they're happy Then I feel like that's one big step out of the way We don't have to look for another hotel Build a relationship, maintain that relationship And repeat performance every year
[00:33:16] I think it's interesting because I've had this conversation with more than one promoter about hotels Hotels oftentimes, I know in the Albany area Our hotels are pretty much filled with business people during the week But on weekends, they're empty There's really not a lot of traffic
[00:33:34] Unless there's a special event My experience... So I spent the first six months just 30 miles around Columbus In every hotel chain And I was amazed at how many people were busy on the weekends How many hotels were busy on the weekends
[00:33:58] I would approach it, here's just open calendar Tell me what's available Because most of them want you to come at them with a specific date Tell me what date you want to do it on Well, I've got four dates that are possible
[00:34:16] But if you tell me your availability, it might help ease the pain here a little bit But anyways, so that was a painful part of the process Just trying to lock down a hotel, find a good date Tom, as far as working together
[00:34:37] The other promoters have been great Mary offered us a Louisiana State Package And Mike Stahl, Michigan State Tim Littoral, Arnold Rob Cato Florida State Package They've offered up whatever we need We've got sponsorship to those tournaments And a rookie amateur open expert
[00:35:05] So there's a variety, but they'll help you out if you talk to them about it Nice Everybody is trying to pull on the same end of the rope here And providing packages for prizes That's the greatest idea, so cool It encourages people to keep playing
[00:35:24] It's a great incentive Mark Mattery, you guys know him, right? From Louisiana, yeah, I love Mark He's a great help too, he does the plaques and trophies and things like that I can't say enough about him We've obtained several sponsors, Steve Parker Masonry And Rick's brother-in-law Chuck Bible
[00:35:47] Son and son and wife That's NFP And then Jesse Vaughn, advanced vapor They're helping us out too There's a lot of expenses involved in tournaments That reminds me, Steve, in your heyday Being a top player in the world
[00:36:09] What was the best trophy you ever got at a tournament? What do you mean, physically? Yeah, something really impressive looking I think about this Me and Swan went up And I'm trying to remember his name, Randy He put on a tournament East Coast Championships
[00:36:32] You talking about Steve Rogie? Steve Rogie literally flew in the top 25 players Yeah, wow That was before I started playing but I've heard about this tournament I heard it was amazing That was at Mad Maggies, Randy And Ann versus Nessie And we won open doubles
[00:36:56] Like a first and third and singles, mixed And the trophies were the biggest I've ever seen They were literally maybe over four feet tall Four feet Back then, I don't know how you get them on the plane now Probably have to pay But those are really nice
[00:37:15] Those are really nice Steve, go ahead, Thompson It seems like a lot of tournaments now are going for plaques You don't see the big giant trophies anymore These trophies now, if they are big you have to take them apart Stuff them in your bag
[00:37:30] And then TSA is going to frisky you What is this? It's a trophy What the hell does it look like? Now Rogie used to put on some tournaments Even when I started he was still putting on some good stuff I heard Mad Maggies in the hay day
[00:37:47] That was the spot And I heard about that tournament He did some stuff, man He loves Foosball He's still around That was where Lewis Cartwright was playing up there He lived in Maine I think those guys were playing there They were all friends
[00:38:06] I think that was like Philbrook Was a rookie at that time Or maybe a semi-pro or something There were some good players up there The Tarot Brothers Billy was still a child But he did some stuff But now it's plaques That's it Even the trophies at Worlds
[00:38:28] They're nice, but it's not like it used to be It wasn't You said physical trophy What are the trophies you received? Spiritual trophies We do a D'Arnold, Derek Frilly They're expensive They might only be 8 or 10 inches high But they're expensive Now we were deciding over that
[00:38:51] We're going to do plaques, but they're going to be bigger They're going to be laser They're going to be better What's some small ones Rick like to give away? There's little 4x6s and stuff like that I got some back here
[00:39:04] We had to have at least 8x10 for fur And 7x9 I told them we don't want anything less than 6x8 Wasn't it Rick? Yeah, the smallest one is 6x8 So big difference We even thought about getting those medals But you got the heavier ones
[00:39:30] And then you got the newer ones They're pretty thin and they're not that expensive But the plaques We did them larger And people are going to like them Plus these days with airlines It's easy to pack trophies They just disintegrate You don't even touch them
[00:39:50] Just fall off of them Just slowly rusting into oblivion You want the memory of course And you want something to say Remember when This was the time I have a trophy from Worlds From early 2000s And the base was actual marble It was a well built trophy
[00:40:16] And now it's just all not that I'm not knocking it but I'm just saying Inflation or something Just bruised with rods come apart Yeah But the plaques I like it when somebody puts some effort into the You know because again we're playing for something
[00:40:37] It's nice to have something to show when you do well So yeah absolutely I was at Ohio State I won this event That means something to me So it makes a difference Who's going to be the TD at your event? Kristen
[00:40:55] Kristen Grogan is going to be the tournament director Nice Great choice Nobody on the planet has more experience than Kristen She's on people You know Arthur Donna Kristen Donna Yeah this is a great group So does that Obviously having Mary there
[00:41:17] That takes a lot of that work off for you I've always been curious about that When Mary runs something that's not hers How heavily involved she is We can basically run that tournament in Europe It's all on the computer now If you notice
[00:41:35] You might not see her a lot at tournaments Randy she's up in the suite She's up there like The Wizard of Oz running everything And the staff has done it so long now Whether it's Donald or Kristen Arthur Donna They've done it so much
[00:41:56] I was pretty clear with her I want this turnkey I don't want to be bothered I want to make sure everybody's happy And you know The biggest thing is I think on our end is Making sure we have the verifiers That people get to the table and play
[00:42:15] And sign them and a match car gets signed Years ago I think I calculated one time On a 16 team bracket If everybody spent 10 minutes Wasting that tournament It adds like an hour and 40 minutes To the tournament It just starts adding up
[00:42:31] So we really want a well run tournament We want people to say That was the best tournament I've been to And we want to go back That's the mission right there It's not money or anything We want people to be happy
[00:42:46] We want them to have a great time And we want them to come back And we want them to talk well about it Building the tradition This is where it starts And you start building from here It's been done with a lot less than the past
[00:43:01] I know if you talk to Steve Murray It was just kind of like the Texas State Started out in just a small club Just a venue, no hotel So you guys are starting a little bit higher In the level and no doubt
[00:43:16] That there will be some great tournaments In the future that we'll start to build On your reputation I got to ask Ohio is full of players There's a lot of players in Ohio And it's centrally located throughout the U.S. So there's a lot of population
[00:43:34] Within 500 miles of Columbus I got to ask you, no And we get into this conversation way too often But it always pays Because you think about The difference between players In the Americas or the United States As opposed to the Europeans
[00:43:51] It seems to be a slightly different motivation So American players do like the money We can't deny that But the Europeans are more into it For representing their city Or their state Or as you'd say, their country And getting the glory Getting the medal, yes, at the end
[00:44:10] Yeah How are you addressing that with Ohio State? Well, Europe, like you said It's totally different I mean, I've been here with Spain When you come into the city The whole city knows you're putting the tournament on There's flags all the way up and down streets
[00:44:30] I walked out of the hotel in a van Loaded kids, was yellow, la boom Whatever it is in Spanish That means, you know, la boom Whatever, I kept asking them What are they saying? They knew who I was from videos I don't know who they were
[00:44:42] The city sponsors it We were in a basketball arena Everybody takes pride in the way they dress They want you to know where they're from And it's just a different... When you're playing for your state Or you're playing for your country It's a whole other level
[00:45:00] In America, it's not just the money Because there really isn't a lot of money But you play... people want to go there And they want to just play all kinds of foosball Literally you have people in America At 18 or 20 events, right? Yeah
[00:45:17] You just don't see that over there I mean, people, they take it serious And, you know Back in the TS days, you had to take a pick You couldn't play open doubles and novice You only could play one And the difference was
[00:45:33] What that did for the tournament was So when novice doubles was on Friday Everybody's watching that chart up on the wall It was huge And then on open doubles Everybody's watching that chart Everybody's focus is on that one event At these tournaments, there's so many
[00:45:54] They really don't care You watch the finals, they really don't care They're playing their own thing It's different We got a sample of that in Dallas, Texas With the ITSF World Series of Tornado Being there to witness how it all broke down You had four events per day
[00:46:12] And like you say, you could only play one event You couldn't play all four events You could play just one event per day And when you're done, you're done You could play from 10 in the morning Until 2 in the afternoon Everybody would be gone for an hour
[00:46:26] Come back at 3 o'clock and start up again The elimination rounds And of course the finals would be done by 10 o'clock And everybody had time to just relax After the tournament was done at 10, 10.30 It's an interesting idea It's an interesting concept
[00:46:43] And everybody gets to play at least five rounds Even though you're playing just one event Yeah, that was good Yeah, there's the... Steve, they do a great job down there I really enjoyed it down there A couple of years ago at Texas State Everything was organized
[00:47:02] When you were going to play, you had breaks You could keep up on where you're at Because they do that... What's it called Randy? Twist format But it's modified Yeah, modified Swiss But people get to play enough And they know what the goal is
[00:47:20] And when you start up in doubles Everybody's focused on it And Rick and I were just chatting about this before airtime Sitting in the stands there Watching the pits So there was the women's open doubles finals But right next to them Was also battling for third place
[00:47:41] The women's open doubles So you had both of those matches going on simultaneously Which to me seemed a little wonky I guess is the best way to put it Because I'd like to see them both So I've gone back and watched the replay Of the open doubles finals
[00:47:55] But that part of it, I think Maybe could be adjusted Just saying Those guys do a great job Mike Arthur is a smart guy Mike Radick He's a smart guy Murray's a smart guy What's his name? Jason Wicks Yes, sir All right, Brittany, they've done this so much
[00:48:20] There you go, Jason is like He knows a lot about IT Video, you see what he does, right? Oh yeah And Steve's pretty much It's his tournament But he'll tell you Radick's running that tournament And that's the kind of way we want to have it here
[00:48:42] Whoever's put the tournament on You don't really run them It's hard, you know I remember the days of unloading tables Setting them up, ladling them And then when it's over Tearing them down and taking it out You probably hit about 50 or 60 You don't want none of that anymore
[00:49:00] Ray's got a crick in his back Just talking about it My back hurts So speaking of video Are you guys, is Inside Foods Inside Foods? Nice, very cool Looking forward to that I'll be watching, no question about it People like to tune in and watch that Oh yeah
[00:49:24] It's the next best thing to being there Let's dive in I know it might be a little controversial Let's dive in What about sponsors? Are there local sponsors in Columbus, Ohio Who are ponying up any money? Yeah, we have three sponsors It was a tough gig
[00:49:50] The three that we have I mean Steve Parker Masary is one Steve's a foosball player And I have a good friend That owns a couple vape stores He's helping us out Then my son Is He's involved in insurance So the insurance business in Indy In Annapolis
[00:50:18] They're going to help us out Hopefully that leads For them it's something If they need insurance At least give them a call We're going to try to make multiple announcements Throughout the tournament About our sponsors Hopefully it leads to something More sponsors in the future Right
[00:50:40] I got a lot of no's But it that way Yeah You gotta ask It's one of those things Especially You're promoting a tournament I do my own thing too I'm constantly self-promoting Do you need this? What's the worst thing they can do? They say no
[00:51:06] If you ask 100 people Somebody's going to say yes You just gotta slang that poop against the wall And see what sticks It's just a matter of putting it out there But it's a hard sell I mean Would you like to promote a foosball tournament? Yeah
[00:51:24] We could have done more But really we only have so much time Of course I'm putting the thing together And basically the sponsorships We would want more We couldn't We had to focus on just Putting the tournament on and everything with that And tells
[00:51:44] And then here's the thing Once inside foos there There'll be documentation of the tournament We can show people this is what we put on It's a lot easier to sell when it's tangible And they can see it And Mark's making us a banner To recognize the sponsor
[00:52:02] And they see it We'll mention it routinely On the inside foos Livestream I think that'll help going forward Could we have gotten more? Yes But it really just hurts me and Rick and Dustin More in a way because We got absorbed the cost of the tournament
[00:52:22] And if things didn't work out as well as we want But with sponsors You can have people sponsoring Administrative costs And they do like in Colorado where somebody will say I'm done in 1,000 In singles Randy, Tom We could do that too So we got a few
[00:52:44] And then we got packages Sponsors But I'm sure I could We can do better next time It's all about getting it off the ground We'll hopefully have more time Time is a fact No question about it I think you're starting off on the right foot It's awesome
[00:53:06] You've got something to build on This is going to give us some data To present to people Going forward Yeah Like I said In the beginning I don't think people really understand The amount of work that goes into getting Something like this set up
[00:53:26] I've got a local gentleman Who keeps asking me about running A tournament Super nice guy Let's just do it He's asking me how much money It's going to take If you want to pony up the cash I'll make some calls We could do it
[00:53:46] And he asked me how much And I told him In the 5 figure range I'll get back to you I'm sure you will I've never heard so much about you But no, it's like Steve said Especially with foosball Everybody has a good idea When it's time and money
[00:54:06] The fact that you got skin In the game I'm excited I'm looking forward to the turn out I'm sure you're going to do a great job I want to see The brackets I'm constantly looking at the brackets I'm looking forward to seeing how the tournament goes
[00:54:24] Plus we want the hotel Right off the bat to be happy If you don't have sponsors In these hotels The costs are increasing They're trying to recoup this Covid loss Look at Mary going from Vegas From hotel to hotel That's because the costs are outrageous
[00:54:44] You just wouldn't even believe what they want now You're right Randy There's a lot of people saying Why can't she have less events Isn't that one of the first things Here's the thing I was around when Mary was getting really beat up Just taking a beating on tournaments
[00:55:02] I know very well What she was going through Now there's some pent-up demand You could say She's worked hard at it There's people wanting to play Because of Covid again Now she's making a little bit of money She's making all this money It costs a lot of money
[00:55:22] But here's the thing Let's say There's a lot of people and you see them They say let's do it like Term of Soccer Let's just have Rookie and Novice And open it Let's pay it deeper You'd be the guinea pig
[00:55:38] You put up the money and let's see how it goes Because this is a big cruise ship You don't turn on a dime It takes time to turn it People do not like Change They do not like not knowing What's going on Sometimes with IFP
[00:55:56] And I'll tell you right now Me and Mary are pretty close Me and that family I love that family And I support her But I've been through We're pretty close So I don't get on there and say anything bad But if I did I recognize Her son
[00:56:16] She's got daughters She's got great kids I would never say things publicly That people say that's just me Pick up the phone and call her She'll pick it up and answer But you just don't know We think we've got these great ideas But
[00:56:34] Randy if you're running your first term And that guy wants to put up five figures You probably wouldn't go let's just have Open doubles, novice doubles Women's doubles It sounds good but we don't have What do players be there
[00:56:48] That's a thing I'm going to try to get people there So I need to try to make people happy Absolutely And it's proven now that it is working At least financially So you've got to be careful with that Can we tweak it going forward Yeah but we'll see
[00:57:04] So the time for experimentation Is later It's some other time down the line Basically going with a good solid format You know double elimination Doing it right Getting the details down And of course getting all the As many players as possible there And make them happy
[00:57:24] That's bottom line The experimentation is going to go on elsewhere I just want to mention A good buddy of mine Out of Buffalo Matt McCrory He's a supporter of the show And he's putting on a tournament next weekend Called Buffalo Championship Now he's a regional guy
[00:57:42] And he does a lot of great Work in that area In his tournament he's going to have A race to 40 points Cup series So if you're playing for your city Or you're playing for your team You can show up with your team
[00:57:58] And if you haven't done that already If you haven't looked into this Buffalo Championship I recommend it because it sounds like it's going to be a blast It's a single day tournament Those guys can do the experiments Because they have less skin In the game necessarily
[00:58:12] Although I'm sure Matt would love to maintain His stellar reputation But it sounds like some of these other ideas Can happen in let's say Lessor or smaller type venues Where we can find out whether or not they work Let me tell you something about Matt
[00:58:26] You might not know this That tournament you just mentioned For what I remember Matt was going to do that On the tournament on our weekend Really? Matt got a hold of me and switched it Got it So it wouldn't interfere with our tournament
[00:58:44] Because he knew that we could probably get 10 or 12 players That would come to ours That we would lose if he kept it the same day So he got a hold of me right off the bat And said I'm willing to change this And here's who you should get
[00:58:58] And they'll be coming So Matt did that That's the way it should be done It's like a community of promoters saying Hey listen guys, here's our calendar How do we make it fair for everybody? Work together Yeah, work together There's no need to compete against one another
[00:59:16] Because there's plenty of There's plenty of foosball players Who want to get out there and do it Wow, guys I gotta say I'm so excited for you I think this is such a great momentous occasion After 12 years And it's like a high-o-state returns Rick, I'll start with you
[00:59:36] What else would you like to mention About this process? By the way, I should ask you Are you planning on sleeping for the weekend of the tournament? It's going to be a normal tournament Originally I wasn't going to play much But that's changed
[00:59:50] So it's going to be kind of a normal tournament For me, I'm going to play in a lot of events I'm playing in all the double events Probably most of the singles Senior Senior Mixed CandyCapped So it's I'm going to play a lot
[01:00:10] I'm going to be busy playing Who are you playing with? So I'm playing with Mike Green from Florida Oh, awesome And Expert I'm playing with Eddie Mubarak From Tennessee And Pro And Kevin Scoltis From Rhode Island And open Alex Romero and handicapped Alex, good Cool
[01:00:40] Senior, I'm going to play with Kevin And senior also You guys are old, you should be fine That's good Steve, who are you playing with? I actually went back And forth on it I was going to play And Then I wasn't because I just want to make sure
[01:01:02] Everybody else is having a good time I'm just going to play one event Doubles with Ryan, he's coming in Ivetta is coming in So I'm glad She's coming And I really want to get women there It just adds to the tournament And just a lot of good women
[01:01:20] I just want women to be there And I'm really glad that Ivetta is coming And Hannah is coming I wish Solomon was coming But it doesn't look like it By the way Did you see Aventa's performance At the ITSF World Series In the women's doubles Wow
[01:01:40] I've known her for a bit We've talked to her a few times here On air, but I had no idea She's a great forward She's great She's just talented, back when I went to World Cup She made Our shirts She did I just remember being there
[01:02:00] There was two people Which was Ivetta and Gina Murray Whatever he needed, they would just keep asking Do you need anything? And then our shirts, something went south With it, and she brought Iron with her and stuff to do the work Wow
[01:02:18] She doesn't mess around, I think she's really talented She's got computers and things like that too She has Websites and things like that But yeah, so is Ryan Yeah, I like him a lot Yeah, enterprising family Ryan Smart Guy, business savvy
[01:02:34] I actually heard, and I don't know how true this is But I heard Ivetta was the brains Behind the Cods The Foosball Cods I talked to her a lot about that Over and over There's a Steve Biney card out there I want a copy of it There is
[01:02:52] I'm just wondering, is there a Steve Biney card out there? Yeah, there's a couple You know I gotta get it signed though Do you remember the original ones? I do, I've seen those U.S. fair U.S. Foosball U.S. sports cards
[01:03:10] Brendan Flaherty had that company and did that Yep I don't know if they're still floating out there or not They'll be all sold out by now I think they're around I think you'd have to Find somebody who has some But I just remember Johnny Horton's card
[01:03:28] I remember that one specifically Yeah, with his long hair Yeah He just looked like an animal He looked like an animal Yeah So you and Johnny Was that about 10 years ago In the finals at Worlds? Yes So how many times during that tournament
[01:03:50] Did you want to punch him? I used to I used to think to myself You know how they have those Bart collars or shot collars Yeah I want to put one on when I was tech And have my butt But I know I need extra batteries
[01:04:08] Because one sec I'm making it through a tournament Oh Yeah Yeah And this is coming from a gentleman Who has had a very illustrious career As a law enforcement officer And take it from Steve He used to say What table we on Just follow the crowd
[01:04:32] Do you think they want to watch us play? Really what they want to watch Is the high wire act with no net Because they want to watch what you're going to do Yeah Yeah Oh Let me tell you The game misses that You know
[01:04:52] Don Swan the game misses that I hear from people all the time You know It's different now It's a kindler Gentler I'm your friend You're my friend Not saying good or bad But it didn't used to be that way You know You know what's funny
[01:05:16] Is I feel like Ryan's trying to bring that back Like when you watch Ryan play He's starting to chirp And he's kind of I feel like he's kind of trying to play that heel role You know in wrestling And he's bringing that back And I really appreciate that
[01:05:32] But I enjoy watching that kind of stuff It is entertaining Because we like foosball Other people they won't watch it But they'll watch that They're not accustomed to the game Yeah It's like fighting in hockey There are people that will go to a game
[01:05:50] Don't know anything about it But they want to see a fight Yeah We need it If we're ever going to sell foosball We need that stuff We're going to have to sit down And get some foosball And play the game On the balcony And go to the gym
[01:06:12] And play golf And we have a great bunch of people That are going to be there Those young kids You know They're going to be there They're going to be there And they're going to be there But as long as they're there
[01:06:32] It's you know back in TS days you had Tom Spear. He wouldn't say word the whole match Right, you know then you had whiz. Well, man. He was a heavy-duty hard on the table play, you know, you got all it's all kinds
[01:06:45] There's quiet players. There's loud players, but The game kind of misses that I think indeed. Yeah, I Agreed no it gets back to also audience Disappatiation, you know I'm sitting next to Steve Murray at ITSF, you know during one of the matches
[01:07:04] I believe it was Stefan from Austria versus In Texas yeah in Texas it was Stefan from Austria versus Tommy Yor in the finals of singles and Steve Murray is going come on. Let's let's cheer these guys on
[01:07:18] Let's make some noise and everybody's kind of like really you want us to make noise really We're not used to doing that Well, they're friends and if you say something to pick a side
[01:07:29] You know it's yeah, it didn't used to be that way, but now it is yeah players players take it personally It's not yeah, it's I mean and they shouldn't it shouldn't just it's just fun as well Yeah, it's it's being you know cheering your hero, you know
[01:07:46] You get you get behind him you have you know even though I don't know there there's somebody that you're just going to have a beer with later on the opposite side You know cheer for him. So what it's it's there's you've got to have favorites
[01:08:00] Me and Horton were playing us open one time and we were playing now Murray and acts in the finals And it was you know how those tournaments were back then this was this was tornadoes largest non-world championship tournament ever it was in Cleveland, Ohio
[01:08:14] Oh, it was just a maxed out tournament and Yeah, I had seven technicals called on him during that tournament and open doubles Wow He knew I'd about had it. We're playing in the finals and he's worn out
[01:08:26] He's like what do we do? And I go look man. Here's what I want you to do I want you to count to ten now He thinks he knows what I'm gonna say, you know count to ten and breathe. I said here's I want you to do
[01:08:37] I want you to count to ten then I want you to come out swinging baby I Know this energy with Different player That's how you push those buttons, you know, you know, you can't yeah. Oh, I got some stories about that
[01:08:57] I think we're gonna have to we're gonna we're gonna have to pick up where we left off here because You know Steve one of the things that I was looking forward to is some some great stories from the day
[01:09:05] And and I mean the couple times you've been on before we had we got some great stories But yeah, I think that's something we have to plan out for the future here
[01:09:14] But yeah, I mean you guys are certainly focused high laser focused on what's happening with Ohio State. I know that Yeah, yeah, no question. Well, I mean I'm excited for you guys like I said where let me see Mississippi State will be in This
[01:09:37] Week and it's coming this week. Yeah, it's this it's this weekend. Yep. It's you know good event Mr. Donald Wilson's putting that on It's one of my favorites. I'm always there. There's the beach time beat down is happening next weekend
[01:09:51] I was in Mississippi states last year and yeah, I remember yes, sir Yeah, they beat me in every category. I've every event. I think we played in the so I remember it well It was a good event. It was a good tournament
[01:10:07] Yeah, they do they do a nice job. Mr. Donald Wilson You know he he's not This is not his first rodeo. Mm-hmm. So they got they got that going on this weekend and it's gonna be in
