What's up, Randy? How are you doing, man? I'm good. I saw 311 in concert like 20 years ago. 311 and the Roots. 311 and the Roots. Oh, oh yeah. I forgot there was a band called 311. Hmm. Yeah.
[00:02:57] Their drummers are one of my favorites, Chad Sexton. Anyway, I went to Nashville yesterday for their tournament. Yes. We had Mike Kelley on last week. I got to tell you, it was great. The location was great. They had seven tables. Tournament ran great. They did a really nice job. Good competition. Mm-hmm. If you're within a few hours of driving and they do another one, you got to go. Got to go. It's a lot of fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:03:27] They do it at a hotel. They give, the hotel gives players a discount on a room. They have on-site parking and then they fed us and it was a lot of fun. Good competition. Eddie, that moron, decided. Here it goes. He called Mike Kelly and said, hey, why don't you put a bounty on me? There's nothing like motivating people to beat you. A bounty on, Eddie wants a bounty on himself? Correct. Yeah. Okay.
[00:03:56] So that level of intelligence is unmatched. So he's like, yeah, here's a bullseye. It's like putting a kick me sign on yourself. Uh-huh. So. On the front. Front, back. It's every. So anyway. So yeah, Eddie didn't, he didn't do much yesterday. Okay. But we had fun. We had, I mean, move some tables. Oh. So. He likes to move tables. Yeah. Yeah. He's a strong guy. Strong guy. So, so yeah, we, we had fun. It was good.
[00:04:26] But anyway, we were in Tennessee and, you know, speaking of Tennessee, I'm really excited for our guests tonight. Two great, two great players from the state of Tennessee. Me too. You know, one of the things that's remarkable about what's happening with the world foosball tour and of course the world championships and what's been happening now that we're getting more exposure with ESPN, et cetera. It's bringing people back. We're seeing players of, of, of, of legendary notes coming back to the, to the table.
[00:04:52] And that would be including our guests tonight, uh, Joy Moten and, uh, Jan Maynard. Welcome back guys. And welcome. Welcome to Foos Talk Live. First of all, thanks for being here. Thank you for having us. Thank you having us. By the way, these guys are actually in the same place, but they're just on different, different, different lines. Just saying. But, um. Really? Oh yeah. Yeah. You didn't know that, did you? She's right beside him. They're right next door. But, uh, partners forever, you know?
[00:05:20] Um, but a legendary partnership nonetheless. And, uh, you have now returned to the game of foosball. That's, that's momentous. That's, that's really pretty astounding. Whose idea was this? That would be me. That would be Jan. Jan. Okay. Yes. And, uh, how did you? She drug me out. She. Out of retirement. Oh man. And, and, uh, did you resist? Shame on her. What's that? Joy, did you resist? I did not resist.
[00:05:50] Oh, it didn't take. It didn't take much convincing. But she said, let me think about it. And then like five minutes later, she called back and said, okay, I'm in. Nice. Very cool. Peer pressure. A little peer pressure. That's all it takes. Just a little. Just a little. It was funny. Cause I, I talked to Miss Joy at the kickoff. Not this year, last year. She was there kind of just hanging out watching. And I was like, are you going to play? And she's like, oh no. No, no, no, no, no. No. It just, it just took Miss Jan.
[00:06:20] It was not in the cards. It was not in the cards. Not in the cards. No, no. I would just call Jan and had her call you. You know, that was not easy. Yeah. Yeah. Give me a minute. Give me a minute. Hold on. All right. What are you eating, by the way? Let me think about it. Brand is eating, eating food. I'm just, I'm just curious. What is it? What is it? Is it good? It's a cough drop, Tom. Oh, a cough drop.
[00:06:47] And for some reason, and for some reason they're like, you know, cough drops are usually hard. These are, these are disgusting, but they're delicious. This is like, I was thinking it's the size of a, of a, of a ham sandwich. But anyway. Just, just cough drops. Cough drops. All right. Just saying. That's it. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:07:08] So I don't, I don't think, I don't think people understand the level or the, the weight these ladies carry on the table. So, you know, leading up to worlds, I, so I talked to Blake yesterday. Blake's now in Nashville. It's great. We got to hang out. And he showed me a text message. I guess Ryan, I guess masters, they, you know, I'm not a master. I don't get, I don't get it.
[00:07:36] So they communicate and they talk about all the, the top seeds going to worlds and, and the lady seeds and the men seeds. And I think these ladies, I mean, the people that know, know, but I think for the common foosball player, like there's a lot of people that have been playing foosball for, you know, 10 years maybe. And they really don't kind of understand who you guys are. But I think for people that do know, this is, this is a pretty big deal, man. You guys coming back out and playing.
[00:08:05] Like, it's going to kind of shake things up because it's been, you know, it's been the same, you know, for a while. It's, you know, we kind of, oh, it's going to be these ladies. And so, you know, I know you guys are smart and you play and you study and you watch. What do you guys, how do you feel about, about these ladies that are kind of running foosball right now? What do you, what do you think about them? It's going to be tough.
[00:08:30] I mean, it's, it's not, you know, when we played 14 years ago, one, we were a lot younger. We played all the time. You know, now we're just getting back into it. So, I mean, it's, it's, it's going to be hard. It's going to be a challenge. What are you doing to prepare? What, what are, you have a regular routine now that you're following just to, just to get yourselves back in shape and what's going on? We're just getting on the table every night. Good. Shooting balls.
[00:08:59] Me, Joy, and Jesse will get on the table and we'll play cutthroat. And we're going to play on Thursdays at Borderline Billiards in Bristol. We play on Thursdays. Nice. Yeah. Yeah. Excellent. Protein. Protein. Doing squats. Right? Yeah. Yeah. So, so, so I mean, 14 years ago, that means Sullivan, Sullivan would have been seven. Right.
[00:09:28] So, you know, she started playing before she even had babies. Yeah. So I remember worlds Oh three. She was there as a baby. I remember her grandmother holding her. Right. Um, and, and I remember seeing you there and, uh, and you, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, I, you know, you guys have been around foosball for, for quite some time. Oh three was my first year. I was in two finals that year.
[00:09:57] I was in finals with Moya and women's doubles. And Matt and I were in open mix finals. And we got double dip by Fred and Cindy. Wow. That's unfortunate. Federico. Oh, man. Federico. So then. And I started playing with Fred the next year. That's what I was going to say. Was it, did he grab you up the next year? Yeah. Yeah. That's what I thought. Hmm. And then, and then how many did you guys run off after that? Six. Six. That's incredible. Wow.
[00:10:27] Plus nationals and all of the other majors. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. For people that don't know. Now, you know. Don't know. Yep. So. Yeah. And when we got, um, you're three, four and five. Um, Jan and I, nine, 10 and 11. Look at that. So you're like Jordan with the bulls in the nineties, baby. It was every three years.
[00:10:55] I was three years with Moya and then I had three years with Fred and then three years with Jan and then 12 was with Fred. 12 years. That's incredible. Jeez. Some of those were. Any, uh, any word from, any word from Fred of late? You ever think he might, uh, step back into the field? Hmm. I don't think so. Yeah. Wow. Not that, I mean, I haven't heard anything that he was even interested in coming and play over here, but. Right. Nice.
[00:11:25] Well, I know, I know like money was always a factor. Money's always been a factor. It's expensive. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. But now that, you know, the payouts are pretty juicy, but travel free. I mean, I got buddies back home in Massachusetts that are complaining about airfare to come down being 800 bucks. So I can't imagine what it's costing European players to come over. Yep. So, yeah, I mean, dude, I got it. It's going to cost me like 150 bucks in gas. This is going to be terrible.
[00:11:56] We're driving too. Yeah. Yeah. I'm so sorry to hear. So sorry to hear of your financial burden, but, uh. Whatever. Yeah. I mean, you don't know where I'm at, Tom. You don't know what I'm doing. You don't know what I'm doing. I never know what you're doing, but that's. I might be back to robbing people. You don't know what I'm doing. I'm just saying. 150 bucks. It might be tight right now, but. No.
[00:12:25] I would never incriminate myself on camera. I would never do that. You know. No, I would never. It's it's. I never thought you would revert to your old self. I never thought that would be the case. But, you know, extreme times call for extreme action. What can I tell you? I would never do that. I go work at McDonald's. I'd go work at McDonald's. No disrespect anybody working at McDonald's. I'd go work at McDonald's if I had to. There you go. There you go. Yep. Make it happen. So. Yeah. No, I. So I had the pleasure of playing these two ladies a couple weeks ago. And I got to tell you. Oh. I could.
[00:12:55] I couldn't get in front of anything on Miss Jan's five. Really? And she tore Chris to pieces with her pull shot. So. Ooh. Yeah. Dude, I'm telling you, man. People really don't understand. The playing field has been leveled. Foosball is one of those sports where, you know, I know there's some controversy going on right now with certain women's sports and different things.
[00:13:22] But foosball is a game where it doesn't matter. You know, the better player is always going to win. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman. Oh, sure. You know, I mean, Cindy. Cindy's won more world championships than anybody. Huge. I mean. Yeah. Miss Joy ran off years and years of world championships. Miss Jan's got a bunch of world championships. And I've seen them just kill guys. I mean, Moya. Even Moya.
[00:13:50] Dude, I watched Moya beat some guys up, dude. And it was bad. Utah State 04. I went to. Don't ask me why I was there. But. There was some guy. I don't even know who he was. But I think he tried to fight her. She smoked this dude. And he got so mad. But, you know. Wow. These lady players are on. She was the first female that won open mix playing forward. Yeah. There you go. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:14:18] And they beat Fred and Cindy, right? Her and Garrett. They did. Yeah. There you go. Yeah. I was at that Hall of Fame. Were you there? Yeah. I was there. Yeah. I was at that. I saw that. I saw that live. Yeah. Nice. Wow. Yeah. She was always solid. She had good results. I mean, even in open, she always did well. She had a bunch of like top 10 finishes and open doubles. She was always solid. Good five. Good shot. Methodical.
[00:14:46] You know, just same as these ladies. You know, I just, I'm excited to see you guys play these young girls. Yeah. Because these young girls are just, they're all gas, man. You know. They're tough. Yeah. They're tough. For sure. But so are you. You guys are a different kind of tough, though. Mm-hmm. Experience tough. You know. You have a different kind of tough. Mm-hmm. You're a different kind. It's, well, you know.
[00:15:16] Look. So again, look. Sullivan is 21 years old. But she's also been playing foosball since she was in diapers. Like, she's foosball old. She's like 20, 19, 18 years of playing foosball. You know? I mean, that's a lot. That's a lot. It's a lot. Hannah. I mean, Isabel's the least experienced of. Even Hannah played when she was younger. Yeah. Oh, sure.
[00:15:44] I met Hannah when she was nine. Mm-hmm. Wow. And then she stopped and she came back. Yeah. And, you know. But it. So Hannah and Linda are playing. Right? Mm-hmm. And they just won nationals. And then Sullivan and Isabel are playing. And they won worlds last year. Mm-hmm. I think Jessica and Liz are playing. I think so. That's a tough team. Oh, I thought I read Keisha and Liz. Is it Keisha? Is it Keisha and Liz again?
[00:16:14] Okay. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Not positive. Yeah, I wasn't sure. Because I know Jessica and Liz just won the kickoff, right? Yep. Yes. So I don't know who Jessica's playing with. Oh, Jessica's playing with Aveda. Oh, Aveda. Okay. Actually, another tough team. Jessica and Liz won the classic. The whole of the classic. That's what it was. Classic. Okay. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's – there's a laundry list of – like, who's – is Cindy going?
[00:16:44] Is Cindy going to worlds? Yes, I think so. Cool. And who's she playing with? Who's she been – is she playing with Shelly? No. Shelly's playing with Stacy, I saw. Okay. So Stacy and Shelly's going to be there. That's a tough team. Wow. Yes. Who is Cindy playing with? Who's she been playing with? I just read it. I just read it today. In that text that Ryan's – the Masters. Okay. Is it Tracy?
[00:17:14] Tracy Brubaker, maybe? No. She's playing with her daughter. She's playing with Allie. Okay. Right? Yeah, I'm pretty sure. That's – I mean, any one of those teams. Any one of those teams can pull this thing out. It's going to be crazy. Jeez. It's going to be tough. But I'm excited to see you guys play. Very much so. Yeah, yeah. No. I – I'm – We have a lot of support for sure. A lot of energy behind us. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah.
[00:17:43] I always tell the girls – I mean, obviously like you guys, I've known them since they were little. I'm always rooting for them. But this year, sorry, ladies, I'm not. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm not. I'm not. Brandy, you're nothing if – you're nothing if you're not honest. That's – let's put it down. I'm never going to lie to you. I'm not. I won't do it.
[00:18:10] So we're a week and a half away. What are you guys doing for the next week and a half? Hanging out? Practicing? What are we doing? We'll be practicing. Yeah. Cool. We'll be practicing. Yeah. Yeah. So do you ramp it up before or do you kind of take it easy? I take it easy. I ramp it up. Hmm. Polar opposites. That's interesting. Okay. Different philosophies. I like that. I like that.
[00:18:37] Any kind of, shall we say, food or drink that you guys consume, especially when you're practicing and then when you go out and play? I mean, do you change your diet in any way? Make it easy. Well, hey. We used to hear the stories about Todd, you know, back in the day, especially in his peak. He was fasting for a majority. Yes. For days. For days. Yeah. For days. Majority of the tournament.
[00:19:05] And it just made him play better, which I don't know. I need a little bit of time. See, back in the day, we would play for days. But now we were playing for one day. Got it. Got it. Got it. Yeah. The event's starting. I love that. Playing your flights. Playing the final elimination. Yeah. It's definitely better. You're not locked to the room. You're not just changing the room. Exactly. It's beautiful. Yeah. Yeah. Like, so again, Miss Jan, you played flight. Miss Joy, you haven't. Right?
[00:19:33] So your experience with flight, what did you think about it? I liked it. Hmm. Yeah. Cool. I did. I like it. Did you, were you able to qualify? We did qualify. Mm-hmm. In pro and in open. Oh, nice. Flight A or flight A, flight B or? Flight B. We qualified out of flight B. Mm-hmm. That's nice. But so you played your flight A, didn't qualify, played flight B, didn't qualify. But you knew exactly when you were going to play, right? Yes. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's beautiful.
[00:20:02] And then, you know, when the elimination starts, you go down, get ready. Yeah. I was fortunate enough to play the first flight format event they had, which was Nationals last year. And it was, I loved it. I don't want to play any other way. Even championship. Championship's nice, I guess, as long as you don't lose. But I've never played that. I haven't played that. Yeah. Just, you just play, you, you, if you don't lose, you get to the finals, right? You play for King Seat.
[00:20:32] King Seat is the final. And if you win, you win. And if you lose, you get second. I mean, I've been in a couple finals like that. And it's nice because it's done. I got second. On time. Yeah, yeah. Which sucks. But then, but then I've been on the other side. I don't want to be second either. That's the first loser. I don't like to lose. Yeah. I hate it. Yeah, yeah. So, but then I've been on the other side where I lose. And then I'm like, like Folsom and I at Worlds last year, I think we were the three seed in pro doubles.
[00:21:02] We had a bye and then we lost our first match. And Chris was like, you want to go home? Like you can't, you can't win, right? That's the, yeah. It was, it was, it's misery. Yeah. Yeah. That's not good. That's not good. But flight, but flight is nice. Right? So I liked it. I liked it. Yeah. We, we didn't qualify in flight A. We qualified in flight B. We were the two seed and then we got to the final and we lost to Hannah and Sam, but it was, it was nice.
[00:21:32] It was nice. Nine o'clock done up to the room, go to bed, you know, and for people that want to go out and party or hang out or it's great. Yeah. It's great. Go everybody. Everybody go party. All you young people go party, drink, do drugs. All of it. Whatever you do to win. Have fun. You know. You only live once. Have a blast. YOLO, baby. That's right. Get after it. Make sure. Don't get any sleep. Don't get any sleep.

[00:22:31] No. Jan has not been to New Orleans yet. Oh. This is her first time. And Joy? How about yourself? Oh, many, many times. Many times. Got it. So. I was born and raised down there. So. Oh yes. About two, two and a half hours from New Orleans. Yeah. In Lafayette. Gotcha. Gotcha. Yeah. No, it's a. Oh yeah. It's a beautiful place. I mean, I went to Cafe Du Monde and then of course, Tony Toko in New Orleans runs a place called, I think it's pronounced Atchafalaya, but it's. Atchafalaya. Atchafalaya. And wow.
[00:23:02] Yeah. The food was phenomenal. It was so good. If anybody is going to be in New Orleans and they have time to go to Tony's place, do it. It's a, it's a treat. Nice. And if, if he knows your foosball table, a foosball player, he'll treat you like, like royalty. So there's. I got a reservation Thursday night. I got a reservation Thursday. Nice. Very cool. Nice. Oh, you'll love it. Oh yeah. Great stuff. I can't wait. Yeah. So, um, it's tradition here on, on foosball radio, foos talk live when you are, you know,
[00:23:29] your first appearance on the show, uh, we have to find out about your origins. So we're going to start, Jan, I'm going to start with you. Um, I gotta ask, gotta ask you the standard question here. So, uh, when was the first time you saw a foosball table? How old were you and what kind of table was it? Um, the first time I saw one was probably at the skate rink when I was probably four or five years old, I guess. Oh, okay.
[00:23:57] And then when I was 10, they built a puppet right behind my house, like two minutes behind my house that I grew up in. And they had two brand new dynamo tables in there. So I started playing and, you know, back in the day when we had some, when there was a location that got new tables, people come from all over, you know, within an hour or two away just to play on the new table.
[00:24:27] And so we got players from Charlotte, High Point, Greensboro, you know, and just started playing, learned how to play. And, uh, when was the first time you actually, uh, formally competed in a, in a tournament? Do you remember that? It was a North Carolina state and 1983, I believe. Oh, okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. And that was, uh, and you were in your teens at that point?
[00:24:58] Um, I was 11. Don't answer that question. Wow. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Who ran that, who ran that tournament? Charles Mackintosh? Yes. Mackintosh. Yeah. Of course. Of course. And, uh, enjoy your turn. What, uh, how about for you? What, uh, what was the first time you saw a foosball table? How old were you and what kind of table was it? Well, the first time I saw a foosball table, I was probably, um, teenager. My parents owned a skating rink and we had a foosball table there, but there wasn't anybody
[00:25:27] there that really knew how to play. They spun the rods. It was just, you know, kids having fun on a foosball table. Sure. And then, uh, my brother drug me out on my 18th birthday and said, Hey, come hang out. Just have some friends playing some foosball. We're just going to go and have some fun. I was like, okay, I can hang out. So I sat in the chair in the corner all night. And then Matt said, Hey, why are you sitting down over there all night? Come sit. I need a partner. And I was like, I'm not getting on the table.
[00:25:56] And he was like, I need a partner. Come get on the table. You've been sitting down all night. So I got on the table and for the rest of the night, I was hooked. So he forced you to play. Yeah, pretty much. He forced me. And my brother is peer pressure on me on the table. I'm seeing a pattern. Yep. I'm not good with peer pressure on football. I'm going to write this down. We can guilt you into it.
[00:26:25] Taking notes. All right. And then, yeah, I played all night and that was it. Yeah, I've never stopped. I didn't stop playing. Never stopped. Okay. Never stopped. And what was the first major tournament you went to and what year was that? First major. Mine was 1996. 96. Nationals in New Orleans. Nationals. Very cool.
[00:26:51] I'm going to say mine was probably in 85 or 86 at the Nationals when it was held in Charlotte. Wow. 85 or 86. That would have been my first major. Huh. How many players were showing up in 85, by the way? How many players showed up at Nationals? A lot. Yeah. I was going to say. Yes. That was a different time. Yes. So was it Tornado Tables at that point or what kind of?
[00:27:20] At that point, yes. Yeah. Okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. Wow. Now, it's amazing. I'm fascinated to know how people get into this and why they get addicted. What is it about the game that just keeps them coming back every time? That's a good question. Right? I think the people have a lot to do with it because you get so close to people. You know, it's just the love for the game. Yeah. I like to compete. Yeah. That's it. That's it for Joy.
[00:27:50] She just wants to kick your butt. That's all there is to it. I just want to win. Yeah. Well, and it's crazy. We're also learned. I mean, you can always learn, but once you start playing and it's like once you learn one thing, you learn and you almost, okay, I'm ready to learn something else. And you learn something else and you just keep learning and learning. It becomes addicting almost. So, and then you put forth into your local tournaments and then, you know, what you practice every day and you go in your local tournaments and you play and you win or you beat players that you think you'll never beat.
[00:28:20] And you're like, oh, this is, this is fun. And the crazy thing is, it's not, it's not one of those things where people are like, you know, I tried it and I kind of liked it. And I was like, let me see if I like it again. And, you know, it's like they play and they're just instantaneously hooked. Instantaneous. Mm-hmm. And then again, the people make a big difference too, because when I first went to my first local, I was very intimidated and I'm a pretty shy person when you first meet me, but.
[00:28:51] When do you get to know her? So I was just sitting there, but the people at Max's in Lafayette were like, just, they got, they, you know, they got me on the table and they're really nice to me. And they just made me feel very comfortable. And from that point on, you know, that was, that was very comforting as far as being a new player. And it can be very intimidating at first when you start learning and you don't know anyone. Yeah. Yeah. Especially when you go to a tournament and they're really good players and you're just learning, you're like, whoa, it, you know, it's intimidating. It's a jump.
[00:29:21] So speaking of Max's in Lafayette, who, who, who would you consider to be like some of your biggest influences in foosball? Well, definitely Terry for sure. Um, he was always willing to help us and help me learn. And, you know, uh, we always went to their house and played a lot. And, um, there was a lot of local players that were really good.
[00:29:45] I mean, we had Safi, you had Waleed, you had Koi Quibido, um, Harry, who ran the terms, big influence on all of our, all of the Lafayette players. He was a very big mentor to all of us in Lafayette. Koi, he just got, he just got inducted into Louisiana hall of fame. No, he did. Yeah. And Harry too, I think. And Safi. I think I, yeah, Safi. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Safi's coming back. Was that last year? I think it was.
[00:30:14] No, I think it was, uh, I think it was 20, 20, I think it was 25. Yeah. Yeah. Safi, I remember when they used to give out the table talks and I had just gotten into food. Like I went to my first worlds in 03 and, um, and then I got a table talk and I was like, Oh God, this is so cool. And then the names. Right. And I, I'd see Safi Dinkmaster Scheiber. I love table talking. I miss that so much. I'm like, who is this guy?
[00:30:42] And, and then, and then, you know, he stopped for a while. And you know, the great thing about down there is that they never like held off their game just because you were new or whatever. Like I would get my butt kicked every week and I wanted to, because that's the only way I would want to learn. Like I want to know what's not working and what's working. Yeah. Safi Dink me once and almost ripped it too right out of the table. Yeah. And it was so smooth. It was so nice. I mean,
[00:31:12] so frustrating. It's so smooth. Yeah. He's, he's, he's really, I mean, yeah. Lafayette, Lafayette's got a, I mean, Lafayette right now probably has one of the strongest bases in the country. Oh yeah. Uh, and it's, it's been like that for a long time, but the base just keeps getting better. It, it's so good. It keeps attracting more players. It does. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Jacob's now down there. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He, he was down there last year and I think he went home for the summer and now he's back.
[00:31:41] Um, I mean, uh, Jessica just moved to Mississippi. So, so she's, she's not far. Um, but I mean, it's like, uh, like gravity. It's just, you know, it's the center of the center of the universe for foosball right now. No question. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And, and they, and they run events like five nights a week. They got two or three different spas. So it's, it's, it's really nice if you're a foosball player to be there. It's wonderful. So, uh, Ms. Jan, how about you? Who'd you say your, your biggest influences were?
[00:32:13] Gosh, female or male or either one. Anybody, whoever, who, who, who, who really helped you and who pushed you? I would say Rick Macias when he first moved to North Carolina years ago, back in the eighties. Like he helped a lot of people get better. He always gave you advice. Bruce was another one that always helped.
[00:32:42] Um, he was really good to, to help you when you needed it. Um, you know, and then just of course watching like Cindy head, you know, going to the tournament and watching her is like, okay, that's who I want to be. You know, yeah. Cindy, I, I, I always enjoyed watching her play just because of her intensity. Oh God. Yes. Yeah. Especially in singles. Just, uh, just fierce.
[00:33:12] Um, what, what do you guys do to intimidate the other side? Is there anything particular as a team that you do? What do you do to intimidate? Maybe I'm too nice. People tell me I'm too nice. She's the sweet one. Everybody says I'm the mean one because I don't smile and I have a hat on and I have my hat down. So everybody says, she looks so nice, but you look mean. And I'm like, she's a devil in disguise.
[00:33:39] So I'm not so nice on the table. That's what they say. Ooh. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Respect. Respect. So now the other thing went off, you know, we were off air earlier. We're talking and Jan, you're always forward. Enjoy your always defense. Why, why is that? What, uh, what caused that to be the case? I've always played forward. Always.
[00:34:06] I've never been a goalie from the time I started. I've always started out forward and that's where I'm comfortable and she's comfortable in goal. Interesting. Yes. I never had any desire to play forward. Really? Okay. I mean, I would play singles, you know, in the tournaments, but I hated it. I hate playing forward every second of it. I think you and I are birds of a feather because I'm still, I'm still a goalie. Playing and stuff. But then that made me focus more on my game. Yeah.
[00:34:35] And I can perfect what I did in the back. So no question. Jan, are you, uh, you're, you're a pull shooter, correct? Correct. Yes. And, uh, who's your, where'd you get your pull shot from? Where'd you get that pull shot? That was just the one shot that I started because I mean, you either did a push kick, a pull shot or a push shot. Mm-hmm. Very few people shot a push shot.
[00:35:02] Pull shot was the main shot that everybody was shooting, you know, before the rollover. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So that's just the shot I learned. And stuck with it. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. What did you think when you first saw the, uh, the rollover? What was your, what were your initial reaction to that? Why are they letting them spin the rods? Good point. Good point. That was my first thought. Randy, you're still spinning the rods, man. How do you get away with that?
[00:35:32] I can shoot a pull shot. Okay. Not, not, not good. It's not good at all, but yeah, I can do it. It's just not good. Yeah. Dude. I look, I always, I shot a pull shot for a little while and that's why it was like, I had a stretch of a couple of years where I shot a pull shot and I never won anything. So. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's just not, I can't, I can't do it. I can't do it. I guess I'm just one of them, them spinners, I guess. I don't know. Whatever.
[00:36:04] Whatever. Cheater. Well, so again, when I, when I started playing, it was, I started playing in like, oh, one, oh, two. And that was, that's what everybody shot. It was easy. Right. You start shooting. I'm like, I'm like, that's easy. All I gotta do is get the ball. And then, and, and it was, somebody showed me how to shoot it and it was easy. And then I was like, I just got, right.
[00:36:31] So, and, uh, Billy always, Billy said, he told me one time, he's like, rollover shooters have no talent. You say that all the time. Yeah. And I was like, I was like, okay. Okay. So I, I learned to shoot a pull shot and I started, you know, stretching my game out, but it's kind of, it's kind of true. Look, I, I, I know guys that have a brush series in a rollover and they use it really well and they're successful. And then, and then we play a pickup game and I'm like, I can't play a pickup game with
[00:37:01] you, dude. I'm like, this is so boring. This is, this is so boring. We're not, we're not, we're not doing this. You can shoot a pull shot at a pickup game and it's fun and we, it's, it's a good time, but you don't shoot a rollover in a pickup game. That's terrible. It's terrible. Anything but. Anything but that. Yeah. A hundred percent. Anything but. Not that. Just not, dude. It really, it really is. It really is boring. It's so boring. It's boring. It is. Winning is boring.
[00:37:29] No, I'm not that, but a good dude watching a good pull shooter versus watching somebody shoot a rollover. It's such a, I mean, that's my opinion. It's enormous. If you, if you have a different opinion, that's your opinion. It's fine. I don't care. I'm just saying it. Hey, I'm a pull shooter. I know what she's talking about. I think a pull shooting is, is much more, much more challenging, much more interesting. And you can, you can find more holes that way. Dude, Billy, Billy's my favorite player. I love watching Billy play. Yeah.
[00:37:58] When Billy shoots his rollover, I'm like, I'm like, whatever. When he shoots his pull shot, I get to the edge of my seat. Yeah. I'm like, I'm cause I mean, I'm like, he's going to smoke this thing, dude. And he thumps that ball. And then you're just so nervous. You just, you stick your guys out there and he just hits a little straight and then he tighten up and then he cracks along. And then the middle so big and he smokes a middle and then, and then he'll get you sit and then he'll shoot a rolling pull kick. And it's, you know, it's exciting. It is.
[00:38:26] He's got, he's got more talent than anybody. Yep. Yeah, he does. No doubt. And it's just my opinion. I'm like, he's the greatest foosball player to ever live in my opinion. Yeah. You could stick him in any era on any table and he's going to win. So, so joy, joy, I gotta, I gotta ask you this because you and I are both goalies. I gotta ask you what, what do you rather defend against a pull shot, a rollover or a push shot? What, what, what do you rather defend against? I don't have a preference. Really? Okay.
[00:38:55] He blocks everything. She just blocks everything. And do you have a, do you have a, a, a certain set, a pattern or what do you use when it comes to, you have a certain, I know some, some goalies have certain methods. It's, they, they, I don't have a path. I don't have a certain set. When I was figuring out that I really liked goal and I was pretty good at it, then I wanted to have my own style and I wanted to have my own defense. So what goes on in my head is, it goes on in my head.
[00:39:24] I don't copy anybody's defense. I never watched anybody's defense. So I use, I use really what I've just learned, taught myself and tried to, I mean, I don't know how to put it into words, but I didn't want to take anybody else's game. I wanted to have my own game. That's great. That's really interesting. It's a, it's, it's so hard to learn really when you think about it, because there's so many different styles of shooting and so many different ways of going about those different
[00:39:52] shots, adjusting to those, those. Right. Different. The thing that I look for are different than a lot of goalies anyway. So what I look for is different than what most goalies look for. Hmm. And what, so it makes my style a little bit different. What, uh, so, well, I don't want you to give away trade secrets. There you go, Tom. There you go. See, we're, we're, we're a week and a half from world. We're not, we're not, we're not. I'm not giving away anything. All right. We're not doing that. Yeah.
[00:40:22] So tell me, what is that? Everybody knows. I mean, everybody that I've played against and everybody that I've had conversations with knows, you know, it's not that it's something that I watch somebody do. Um, I just figured out in my own head. Mm-hmm. Wow. Interesting. And of course, playing with the, with the partners you've had over the years obviously means you're very successful as a goalie. So that's, uh, that's extraordinary. Well, we'll have to. And what was good about playing with those players, especially with Fred, because when
[00:40:51] he asked me to play, I was very nervous to play with Fred. Oh, bet. Yeah. And, um, I always play with Matt and mixed and he just let me always do my own thing. He never, unless, you know, I was doing something that I shouldn't have been doing or, you know, making a pattern or something. Um, and I told Fred, I was like, look, I said, you know, and he gave me pointers to improve my game, but he never told me what to do, you know, where to go, how to shoot or, you know, any of that. So he let me literally just do me.
[00:41:21] And that's what I love. Boya was the same way. And that's the way me and Jan play. I let her do her thing and she lets me do my thing. And that's, that's how it works. Trust between one another. Yes. Yeah. That's huge. Huge. Yeah. Understand. So me and Fred, I mean, if I did get stuck, he would just say, Joy, just shoot long. That's all he would tell me. Just shoot long. That's it. But that's it. Well, it was fun.
[00:41:50] Here's a scenario for you then. I'm just going to, just going to, just going to ask this as a hypothetical. Okay. It's, it's, it's the third game and you're down a game and you need this desperately and it's four, four and you have the ball. Are you going to pass or are you going to shoot? Wow. It just depends on the situation really. Hmm. Okay.
[00:42:19] Maybe, maybe just look for what's always situational. Situational. Gotcha. Okay. I'm getting stuffed. I'm getting some going down the middle hard. I'm eating the ball. Never know. You never know what I'm going to do. You never know. That's what I'm doing. That's what you're doing. That's what you're doing. Like I said, he's honest. What can I tell you? He is honest. I'm going hard down the middle, baby. I'm eating them. I'm leaning. I'm leaning.
[00:42:48] I'm leaning on my three rod with my left hand and I'm eating the ball. Oh, boy. Now this is just going. It's disintegrating so quickly. But, you know. No. Yeah, me and Chan, we've been playing a long time. We've got blank game plans going on. We've got things going on, strategies and defenses. So, I mean, we have a whole thing that we've been working on.
[00:43:16] We've talked to a few players recently who keep notebooks. You know, and I guess that was more common back in the day. Keep a notebook about each and every player that you come up against. So, you know what they're doing. I had a notebook. You did? Oh. Mm-hmm. There you go. And it changed at every tournament. It did? I updated it at every tournament. Wow. Very cool. Or if I played, you know, I went to a state or a city or whatever. If I played a person that I had a note on, then I always updated it every time I played them. Got it. Got it. Got it.
[00:43:46] So, adjusting, of course, from tournaments. It's a tournament, but also from match to match as well. Match to match. Wow. That is cool. Well, obviously, that's a sign of success right there. That makes a difference. No doubt about it. But how about you, Jan? Do you keep a notebook? No, I do not. Hmm. No need. No. No notebook. Hmm. Okay. All right.
[00:44:14] Well, but you're successful, so nonetheless. Just pass and score. Pass and score. That's it. What's complicated? The whole name of the game. What's complicated about that? You need a notebook for pass and score. Miss Joy's going to block. I just got to pass the score. That's it. That's it. That's it. Mm-hmm. Get the ball. Tom. Get the ball. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Being a forward is easy, right?
[00:44:44] He just passed the score. The goalie has all the hard work, and then the forward steals all the glory. It's foosball. It's easy. I give Joy all the credit. Yeah. I give her all of it. Because you guys are a good team. You're good partners. Yeah. Unless you play with Eddie. If you play with Eddie, then when Eddie wins, it's because of him, and when he loses, it's because of his partner. You know what?
[00:45:10] I think what we're going to do is we're going to build a nice little memorial to Eddie, and we're going to put it up on the screen. You know, poor Eddie. It's going to be up on the screen. Every time you mention his name, that's going to pop up on the screen. Poor Eddie. He doesn't need that. He doesn't need that. He doesn't need that. He doesn't need that. I know he's listening. I know he's listening. He's a nice guy. Come on. Come on. Jeez. Cut him some slack. I never said he wasn't a nice guy.
[00:45:41] All I know is if I ever need furniture moved in my house, he's the first guy. There you go. That's the guy right there. That's the dude right there. Yeah. So, I know it's been a while, but now, of course, you know, 14 years, the equipment has changed. What do you, what do you, how do you guys feel about the balls? I know that's been a big, it's always a big topic right now. A big issue. Big issue.
[00:46:09] Well, we ordered 10 of the new balls. Okay. I like them. Love them. Really good. You liked them? In Ohio? Yeah. We did, yeah. Were they, were they like the ones you have now, or were they like a little darker and bouncier? They weren't bouncier. No? But they weren't as fuzzy.
[00:46:37] But there was still enough grip on there that you played well. Okay. They weren't too slippery. Okay. Yeah. And then Wobble Mutt. I think the 10 you just ordered are the ones that are going to be used at Worlds, of course. And we used those in our, in our Smashdown a couple of weekends ago, and they were great. They were awesome. Yeah. We had them yesterday in Nashville and I loved them. Oh, cool. They were the closest thing we've had to balls like two years ago. Like the really nice pink fuzzy slow ones. Yeah. They're, I like those. Those are good. Yeah.
[00:47:06] I think they're going to change the dynamic. I think they're going to change the outcome at Worlds, which is sad to say, but you know, it's the tables, the tables have been weird. Like the cabinets with dead walls and different stuff. Yeah. I know, I know Tornado is, I've talked to a couple of people and I know they're doing some stuff to remedy it, but, but the balls have been the biggest issue, man. I'm glad these, these are nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I like this.

We're going to leave early, early Thursday morning. Mm-hmm. And I think it's going to be about a 10-hour drive, I guess. So as soon as we get there, we'll probably go in and shower, rest a little bit, go down to the tournament room, play some pickup games. Got it. Cool.
[00:51:27] You know, see how the tables feel. Joy, what about yourself? Well, I have an engagement that I can get out of on Friday. So I'm actually flying in on Saturday. Oh, okay. So I'll be there Saturday. I think I'm flying out like 1.30. So I'll be there a little bit after that. I'll go and shower and get changed and come down and say hi to everyone and touch the table a few times and, you know, just kind of get the feel of the room and hang out.
[00:51:56] And that's kind of what I like to do is get the feel of the room. Right. And then touch the tables. Nice. Well, the room is going to be 30,000 square feet. It's a space. I'm excited. Yes. Yeah. The hotel is the hotel is really nice. This is the nicest hotel. That's what I keep hearing. Yeah. Yeah. The hotel is nice. There's a Starbucks inside. Chick-fil-A is next door. It's sweet.
[00:52:24] The rooms are nice, but the ballroom setup is – that's one thing, man. I'll give it to Ryan, dude. He does not cheap out on these ballrooms. They're really nice. Him and Aveda are doing a great job. Fantastic job. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Now, if you had your wish and you had one thing you wanted to add or change about the World Foosball Tour, what would it be? Jan, is there one thing you'd like to see happen?
[00:52:56] Nothing. I think Ryan's got just about everything covered. I know. I mean, they've got – Covered. Yeah. Yeah. I think they've got everything covered. This is our first time back. I mean, he was a national, so I don't really know what could be improved. Or, you know, we're just going and experiencing the whole thing. Yeah. Boozing the ball. Boozing the ball. There you go. Boozing the ball. Yes. Well, one of the things I would recommend for – especially for people of my rookie stature is to level up.
[00:53:26] Go to the level up. Level up. Those level up lessons they're going to be offering to Foozers that weekend. Oh, okay. Yeah, I think every day he has a level up lesson. I don't know. Yep.
